What Makes a Little Red X Blog?

by Gayla McCord on April 27th, 2007

Is there one or more specific items that you feel is being overused on blogs?

It can be colors - graphics - services - advertisers - fonts - etc.

I’m really interested in learning what exactly a blogger can do that would instantly drive you to clicking the little red X.

For me, it would have to be graphics that are far too large and takes too long to download.

Too many Pay Per Posts and not enough of the bloggers personality and talent shining through.

Old worn out blogger templates. What can I say, I love eye candy!

Your turn!

    These are my dislikes lately

    1) to many reviews
    2) to many links to other sites, for no other reason than to pull in traffic
    3) Same tired theme
    4) Blogs that blog about blogging.

Too many personal details that are told in a completely uninteresting manner. It’s Ok to give personal trials and tribs, but make something humorous out of it at least.

Straight up: animated gifs. There is nothing worse, never use them! Ever!

Then there is ranting blogs that have seemingly no purpose but to let off steam, and I’m noy willing to take that steam on.

Finally, I really hate themes that are broken, columns that have got lost, horizontal scrollbars. Graphical nightmares like that just aren’t worth looking at. Sometimes I think that was the reason plain text feedreaders were invented.

But please take those animated gifs away from me!

Music! I have when you open a blog and someone has music playing… I almost always close it immediately.

Broken links. I hate getting excited about reading more then clicking on the link and it doesn’t work!

Animated graphics. I’m not a fan at all.

Music. But since I have the speakers on my laptop turned off, that’s not much of a problem for me.

Partial feeds. I read in blogs using Google Reader. I click through when I want to comment. I hardly ever get interested enough in a partial feed to click through to read the rest. There are only a few blogs that I even bother to subscribe to that use partial feeds.

Too many ads are nasty, I agree. Also I dislike Snap, it just gets in my way and music playing at me is also a pain.

When I see subject lines that say “OUCH” or “HMMM” or “WEEE” — I click the red X fast and I never come back!!

My time is precious to me and I don’t have time to figure out what your post is going to say. Your subject line is supposed to tell me what your post is about. If you can’t tell me what your post is about in your subject line then I don’t make the time to read. I X Quick!

    For me, it’s
    • music or someone talking,
    • too many flash ads, gaudy colors that blind my eyes and makes reading so tired
    • too many quotes within the text
    • those SNAP stuff.. they slow down the loading

Natron ~ Blogs about blogging huh? You’re funny! I do agree with you on themes though. I hate to see overused themes!

Sterling ~ Many people use their blogs as a form of therapy to help relieve stress of whatever is bothering them. I have a few like that! I think the blogging about personal trials and tribs does have it’s place and it’s important for a blogger to realize they can have multiple blogs for multiple topics. I have 12 for that very reason!

Ivan ~ Welcome Spain!!! Glad to have you here! I love blogs with original content too! I love getting to know new minds and see people sharing their knowledge and opinions! That’s one of the big beautiful things about blogging!

Phil ~ Having been a recent convert from dial-up I have to admit I hate animated or flash images. I realize that so many out there are still on dial-up and try to appeal to them too. People tend to forget their out there.

Mike ~ ACK I don’t like music either. The main reason my speakers are always off anymore!

As for partial feeds. I do choose to use them most times because I’ve encountered Splogs that steal my content. It helps to prevent that. It’s a sad thing that a few bad apples ruin it for the rest of us.

Michelle ~ I’m not a fan of snap either.

Angela ~ bar-none - if a title isn’t inviting, I’m not reading! I visit blogs through my reader and unless the writer is getting a little jiggy with naming their posts, they’re losing a reader in me!

Doris ~ Blinding colors. I absolutely HATE black blogs with RED print! ACK
