Technorati - the good, the bad and the ugly

by Gayla McCord on March 23rd, 2007

technorati.jpg

From the moment I was introduced to Technorati a couple of years ago, I’ve had an up-and-down relationship with them - that was until David Sifry sent me an email and took special care to resolve my issues personally.

With that level of customer service, my loyalty was solid. Nothing can compare to hands-on customer service.

I supposed I’d always naturally assumed that everyone loved Technorati as much as I do — until yesterday.

I’m not sure what the history was, or what experiences produced an end result of having lost a user, but it did.

Since reading the displeasing comments of a former Technorati user, I have to wonder, how many more of you are there out there?

Perhaps it’s that I have one of those “topics” that just seems to work well within the dynamics of Technorati, who knows?

Regardless, if there are faults in the overall service, I’m curious to know what they are. I’m just nosy that way.

So, that said, what is your impression of Technorati? Love it? Hate it? Why?

8 opinions for Technorati - the good, the bad and the ugly

Hi Gayla, and thanks for commenting over on my blog.

Well done with your past three months’ earnings! I aspire to build a similar online reputation, although it will be a while no doubt (I’m still a blogging baby).

As for Technorati, I enjoy their service and watching my rank improve from week to week.

I’ve read stories of people becoming disenchanted with their ranking algorithms (sp?) but at the end of the day it’s a free service, so it’s unreasonable to complain.

If you don’t like it, forget about it in my opinion.

    Bye for now,

    David

Thanks for the post, I too am interested in hearing about people who have had bad experiences, we work really hard to ensure that everyone gets indexed and fairly ranked. This makes a lot of spammers angry, of course, but that’s to be expected. We also occasionally mess up, or misclassify people, or have problems with our systems, but we’re always plugging away trying to fix things.

If there’s anyone who has had problems in the past with Technorati, I’d suggest that you give us another shot - we’ve done a lot to improve our support responsiveness, and have created support forums and FAQs for our users to help each other. If there’s something that just isn’t working to your satisfaction, and our support folks can’t help, then just give me a call - 415 846-0232 - and I’ll get on it personally.

Thanks again for the great blog, keep it up!

    Dave

Dave, Thanks for commenting. Having worked in customer service for a number of years, I realize just how important consumer feedback is in helping to develop the best possible service.

You’re getting really good at this hands-on response stuff - and in record time too! :)

I have had good experiences with Technorati, too.

They provide a useful service that works well with my blogs. The algorithm may not be perfect, but it’s the big picture I’m looking for anyhow. I can see that over time my blog has become more popular and can see who is linking to me.

    Gayla,

I had it not been for the way in which technorati shows who is linking to our sites, etc. I would have never found those people that had scraped all your content over on B5 media. Wouldn’t it be nice if dishonest people didn’t have a way to utilize the technorati service?

I’ve always used Technorati because, well, everyone else was. Then a fellow blogger who was helping me fix some coding issues suggested that I stop altogether. I don’t see the harm . . . it’s free and it couldn’t hurt any, right?

Angela, thanks for pointing that out. It’s just another little perk to the benefits of Technorati that sometimes gets overlooked.
