Sometimes You Just Have to Whine

by Gayla McCord on February 7th, 2008

Broken Mirror and Bad Luck

Please forgive and excuse me while I get this whine out of the way before I explode!

They say bad things happen in 3’s. God I sure hope so! Most times I’m able to let things roll off my back, sink myself into my work and let the world pass me by.

Not this week!

Tuesday morning we woke to a broken coffee pot. You just know it’s going to be a bad day when you can’t start it off with a nice hot cup of coffee, right? As IF it could get any worse…

It did!

Tuesday night as the cold front moved through Indiana, terrible storms rocked our state and several inches of rain were dumped in it’s wake.

While we didn’t experience storms near as bad as our neighbors on the western side of the state, we did end up with a severely flooded basement. The husband and I spent our entire day soaking up what we could with shop vacs, carpet cleaners and mops. We rented a large carpet drier, but that didn’t seem to be doing the trick.

Fortunately we were among the first to call our Insurance company and the adjuster was able to stop by within a few hours of our call. He was here all of 15 minutes and determined we were most likely eligible for our maximum coverage payout. I knew it was bad, but given that the kids and I realized it was beginning to leak the night before and had placed so much up and off the floor, I just didn’t think it would be THAT bad.

While the carpet was drying, I went to the garage to move my Blazer outside so we could move furniture from the basement there. Crisis number three begins. Blazer won’t start. Husband thought it might be distributor getting damp, pushed it outside to get some air - a day later, still won’t start. Called tow truck - mechanic delivers the verdict that it’s most likely the fuel pump, still waiting on the total result and damage estimate.

Professional restoration cleaners were sent last night at 8 PM. Currently there are 7 air movers that sound like jets and a 125 pound industrial strength de-humidifier running in my basement. If all goes as they anticipate, we should be dry tomorrow around the same time my Blazer will be done in the shop.

Now, I do have a hair appointment tomorrow, I’ve got this horrible fear I’ll walk out with a Britney Spears buzz or purple highlights. I’m not so sure I want to risk my chances THIS week.

Ok, I’ve got that off my chest - now I can get on with the rest of my week.

I guess the bright side is - I’m here to whine about my week.

    (((GAYLA)))

I hate this week too, hasn’t been good. Hope yours starts getting better. There are no words of wisdom, but I definitely suggest once that car is up and running you go to a starbucks or local coffee shop and unwind…at least for an hour.

    Oh, Gayla!

My heart goes out to you! When it rains it really does pour, doesn’t it?

I’m putting on my Adjuster’s hat now. Your carpet probably will not dry without mold. I would insist on new carpeting. One month after we moved into our house 5 years ago an improperly installed dishwasher hose burst down through to our finished basement. We had a professional restoration team within 4 hours and the fans were running for 4 days! We ended up with new carpeting throughout the basement.

I hope you have a fantastic weekend. You deserve it!

Oh, I feel for you. I think you have paid your dues. I have been through the air movers and dehumidifiers in the basement. The bright side, if there is one, is that after this forced basement cleaning you will get rid of a bunch of junk that you had probably been meaning to go through for years.
