Review: Prevent Serious Injuries with this Small Gadget
If you’re using an electric tool, be it a hedge trimmer or a drill, what do you do when the power cuts out? Chances are you bring it away from what you’re working on and relax your grip. But, if the power cut was due to a short interruption in power and the power comes right back on, disaster could happen.
Another scenario could be in the kitchen. You’re using a big mixer and you blow a fuse or trip a circuit breaker. Not many people think to put a “dead” appliance off when they go deal with the problem. While you go fix the circuit breaker, a young child goes to investigate and puts her fingers into the mixer to taste what you’re making. You flip the switch and the mixer starts.
Disasters can and do happen. A couple of similar accidents occurred to SafeStart Systems founder Jon Russell and he wanted to find a way to prevent these accidents. The result of Jon’s persistence was the SafetyGate, which is an automatic shut-off system for electrical appliances in situations like those described above. The great thing about this product is it is small, doesn’t need installation and it’s inexpensive (18.99 plus shipping). You can read the story on how SafetyGate began on their website.
You simply plug your appliance into the SafetyGate plug. This plug acts like a “gate” by sensing when power cuts and is turned back on. If it senses that the switch is still on, waiting for power, the SafetyGate doesn’t allow the power to go through. To get the appliance to work again, simply turn it off and then turn it back on.
