Reflections of Summer
With Memorial Day being just around the corner, nostalgia sets in and reflections of summers long ago resonate in the crevasses of my mind in an almost de ja vu fashion. Somehow I know I’ve been here before, but times were much more simple then.
For me the Memorial Day is about remembering those who are missing from our lives. While it’s a holiday that’s recognized one weekend a year, I find myself paying memorial tribute all summer long.
Whether it be recreating tasty summer treats that remind me of hanging out at my grandma’s house while my parents worked or watching kids capture fireflies to see just how bright a Ball Jar will become the more full it gets.
Some of the most delightful tastes of summer I long for every spring are:
fried green tomatoes
rhubarb cake
strawberry rhubarb pie
fresh garden green onions and radishes
warm ripe tomatoes plucked right from the vine with a dash of salt for added flavor
a fresh batch of wilted lettuce - anyone care to guess what that might be?
garden green beans with new potatoes and smoked sausage
homemade ice cream and strawberry smoothies
fresh squeezed lemonade
sun tea
homemade ham salad made with Eckrich bologna
homemade macaroni salad and kidney bean salad too
fresh fried garden cabbage
homemade salsa
and my favorite summer treat - orange push-ups
Do you have a particular taste of summer that you long for? A taste that might have very specific childhood memories attached to it?
There are times I long to go back - back to a time when the box fan was the only means of cooling off and the sounds of frogs and crickets sang us to sleep as opposed to the modern day hum of an air conditioner. A time when kids were safe to run about neighborhoods with their friends and would run home at the sound of the dinner bell chimes from the back of our neighbors house.
One of my very favorite memories was sleeping in on a warm summer day, the windows open as a breeze blew across me. I could smell the fresh batch of ham salad my mom was making in the kitchen and could hear, ever so slightly the song Sky Rockets In Flight as it carried the scents of summer to my room.
As much as time may change, some things will forever remain the same. I’ve already begun spoiling my family with the delicious tastes of summer and will continue to do so until the chill of Fall whisks them away for another year.

My favorite summer favorites are green beans with new potatoes, watermelon, strawberries, corn on the cob, and tomatoes fresh from the garden. Yum!

There are so many favorites from my childhood, almost always involving visiting my grandparents for summers. A favorite was fresh mashed turnips from my grandmothers garden. If you’ve never had any, you should give them a try.

fried green tomatoes YUMMY
this sounds like a southern thing??
I am from the great white north, called Canada, but really enjoy those, my step mom used to make them and wow,
well I have a garden this year, I might sneak in a few before they are ripe, and do some myself
