How Would You Respond?

by Gayla McCord on May 5th, 2007

If a close friend approached you and wanted to start blogging as a possible career, were clueless as to what topic they should choose - but needed to make sure it was a profitable one, what would you suggest?

For me, I always try to point people in the direction of health. It seems health blogs do much better. In fact, I earn 90% of my income from health related blogs and website.

My Work at Home Mom and family blogs are more a form of personal therapy and community contribution then an income.

Besides pointing them in the general direction of health, what could another suggestion be?

It all depends on what you want to make money from.

If it just adsense then health is a good option but there are other markets that you could do a lot better with affilate products and such.

I’m facing this subject for myself, I’d really like to find that perfect niche. I just don’t know what I’d really like to do. I’ve played around with different topics on my own blog just to see. Not sure if I could do a health one, wouldn’t even know what health topic to choose. Currently I’ve been researching apnea and asthma in children because the doctor mentioned my youngest my have something wrong with his own breathing. But just to choose a topic might be a bit difficult unless your friend really knew it.

I’ve thought several times about starting an autism blog because of our son. But, I would end up hating the blog very quickly. It would be too hard to sit around spending so much time talking about autism.

I have been thinking about a couple blogs based on much more mundane medical conditions that I have and should probably just shut up and start one of them to see what happens.

I’d be sure to suggest whatever the prospective blogger is passionate about.

I find it’s easier to keep a blog on the move if it revolves around a genuine interest, such as my creative design blog. I love the world of design!

Does she want to be a problogger or use her blog to drive interest in her business?

If it’s for her business, she needs to consider how she’s going to convert her readers/visitors into clients/customers.

What about a combination of physical and spiritual health blog, they go together.

Hi, what is your friend most interested in?
I find that parenting blogs are quite good and can be quite profitable. However these days people are becoming more and more involved in the health scene, which is of course, good. Maybe your friend can see what she/he is most comfortable with and really enjoys doing then decide on the blog from there. :) Good luck!

Health can be a great topic when you find the right niche. Before you jump in and start blogging you have to research keywords and the competition. Nothing worse than having a blog that makes no money and sees no traffic. Luckily there is high interest in health related products and with a little creativity you can find a very profitable niche.
