Five Reasons To Blog
By: Gayla Baer

1. To make money
2. As a resume
3. To have a voice
4. To learn
5. To socialize
Have you ever thought about your blog as being a resume?
If you have any hopes of getting a writing gig with a network or as a contracted blogger, you need to begin to look at your blog as your online resume and image.
Why do you blog?

Lots to think about there, honestly I’d never looked at my personal blog as one. Only those “niche” blogs I do. Thanks for the reminder. BTW- expect an email today.
There is a lot to think about. After reading a couple of good books lately, I’m trying to cut back on being so “wordy” and get to the point in much of what I write that’s not so personal.
That was my first attempt
As a writer I don’t think of them as a resume, necessarily, but more as a portfolio. That’s why I get stressed (probably needlessly) if I happen to find a typo.
The blogs do work as a portfolio to some extent. This week I got an e-mail from someone who wants me to write web content for her. Yeah!
Laura- that’s great. Congratulations!
Currently I blog to learn how to blog. The other reasons might be valid for the future.
Never thought the blog can be a ‘resume’ and again, it sounds logical cos my blog is my ‘personal voice’. I blog to learn, grow, make friends and make $$ too.
My blog, while not being very resume like, was brought up in my last job interview on a 30 inch widescreen monitor to look at. Thankfully the design stayed intact and a couple of the code examples I have written and subsequently blogged about worked nicely.
It must have worked too, as I got the job!
I blog to…
1. Make money
2. As a web design & writing portfolio
3. To have a voice
4. To learn
I haven’t made much money or created great design portfolio pieces from my blogs but I do have a voice and I have learned quite a bit since I began blogging. That’s 2 out of 4, enough to be pleased for now.
I’ve always enjoyed writing, but I never had the inclination to sit down and pound at a keyboard for hours on end every day for months on end until the end result resembled something salable.
Now I just pound on a keyboard for hours on end every day until the end result is posted for free, on the internet.
My blog is a reflection of what I see in my profession, a cathartic response to the evil in the world. Blogging has been a fantastic learning experience as well, as anything worth doing usually is.
