Even Uncle Sam Doesn’t Know What a Blog Is

I’m one of those procrastinaters who waited until the eleventh hour to get my taxes done. Uncle Sam is without a doubt, my least favorite relative and I dread visiting him every single year.
Ok, back to my point…
This year we had a new accountant take over our account so once again I was faced with the same question I get asked most often –
What exactly is it you do? And What does a blogger do?
My usual quick and to the point response is:
It’s most compared to a journal, that’s written online and targets specific niche topics.
Of course new accountants will look up a “classification” to give us bloggers. That caused me to pause and think, Uncle Sam doesn’t even know what we do, so how can we expect the general public to?
I’m a little curious as to how other bloggers explain blogging?
Are you elementary in your description? Do you get a bit more technical?

I just tell them that I run a few websites and then give them the links so they can poke at them in their own time…unless they ask about the technical side of how it works. Then I open up the admin panel and start pointing.
By the way, did you know Anne Coulter is advertising some email column in your AdSense block after the post. Big picture of her and everything.
More often than not I’d say I publish articles on my website, or something to that effect.
Since I write paid posts, I told my parents I get paid by advertisers to write about their products on my website. Makes me sound a LOT more important than I really am!
But, since I haven’t made enough money from blogging to even need to claim it on my taxes yet, I put “Homemaker” on our tax return. I like “Writer” better though
Don’t feel bad, Gayla. Consider which of the following two scenarios is more sad:
1) One day my wife had to ask me just what it is that I do for a living because she didn’t really know.
2) I didn’t have a straight answer for her…
D’oh!
I have a hard time explaining it to my own family sometimes! It just isn’t quite mainstream yet. Or maybe it’s my family that isn’t mainstream
I can’t decide.
Guess what I am sitting here working on right now? You got it - our taxes! Glad to know I’m not alone.
And we’re surprised the gov. doesn’t know this?
I haven’t come up with a good explanation either, although I have drawn several pictures of a blog on stray napkins & post it’s to explain my point.
