Brainetics - A MomGadget Review

by Gayla McCord on May 13th, 2008

brainetics

Have you heard of Brainetics?  First, I’m just going to say is WOW, this is an unbelievably fun game. I’ll be completely honest, I hate math and probably shouldn’t have passed any math class I was in during my High School Years but due to a “weird” math teacher and then one that didn’t speak much English I did. So, I wasn’t really looking forward to playing this game with my kids when they asked. But was all for them playing it.

“Open the box to start thinking outside-the-box- NOW!”

The DVD set starts off with a competition-like-game show which will definitely draw everyone in. After that Mike Byster, the instructor of the game, gives the viewer time to try to do the problems too. Once they ding in with the answer Mike will show everyone how to do it for themselves in an easier way then any of my math teachers ever showed me. Now you may have to pause it to give your kids a chance, but simply click play again and continue. Your child will become just as fast.

Inside Brainetics:

Brainetics Playbook

Manual for parents

5 disc DVD set

2 bonus DVD set (not sure if it comes with all)

deck of cards

flash cards

My 11-year-old son loves math and sat right in front of the television and quickly tossed the dvd in. That night, he begged to stay up and hour later to watch more math. Math? How often is it your son or daughter asks to do more homework?

My 7-year-old daughter, couldn’t wait to play the Magic Square and was so excited she did it with her teacher the next day. Since you’ll probably be wondering a magic square is when you can add each line up and equal the same number at the end of that line. Imagine a square with 5 squares across, 5 squares down. she’s given a number like 135 and must figure out how to get every line to equal it without using the same number twice. This is also one of my son’s favorites, but his ultimate favorite as he calls it would be reading my mind.

Brainetics is recommended for grades 4-7, however my 2nd grader was able to do some of these. This is definitely a game I recommend not only to those needing a little extra guidance in math but for those that are bored and need a challenge. For those wondering, I think this would make a fantastic Homeschool purchase, not only is it educational but a fun dvd/game to watch. It’ll definitely exercise your mind.

That’s pretty cool. I know the math game for the Nintendo DS is really popular, can’t recall the name. There’s also a mini video game consol designed just for math, spelling, vocab, and such out there that I’ve seen commercials for. It’s great that parents are taking advantage of technology and using it to help further their kids’ intellect.

That is very cool. I was looking for a way to help my oldest daughter with her math. This looks like it’ll “trick them” into having fun and learning at the same time. :)
