Are You a Selfish Blogger?
Until yesterday, I had no idea that I was being a selfish hostess on my blogs to the point of even cheating YOU out outbound links - even when you would place your website URL in the optional field of the comment form. It wasn’t being recognized.
Most everyone who has a blog or a website will know that improving the Google Page Rank of your site is key when it comes to 1. being found 2. increasing your audience and 3. increasing your strength in the area of monetizing (more money!).
That’s all been fixed now!
Now you can get a nice outbound link simply by leaving a comment on my blog with your website or blog URL added to the optional ‘website’ field in the comment form found attached to any post here on MomGadget.
Now that I’ve stopped being a stingy blogger - every comment or trackback you leave here on MomGadget will result in an outgoing link from my site to yours. The search engines LOVE this! And YOU will too!
Can you believe the majority of blogs don’t allow this? Most blogging software has “rel=nofollow†automatically added to comment URLs. Initially, it was a good idea and was created to combat spam, but with programs like Akismet, there’s really no reason to cheat yourself and your readers out of this rewarding link collaboration. And it’s much better then doing a blogroll!
I took the advice of David and Dawud and have installed the Wordpress plugin that removes the “nofollow†code, because I want to be a generous blogger and to encourage more discussion here on MomGadget.
Don’t be shy! Comment and link! It’s a good thing :)
I’m also going to follow suit and link to a few others who have taken this same position — so commenting on any of the following blogs will also provide outbound links pointing right to you!

this is great! thanks for this tidbit Gayla… I put my Barefoot Books link in case some parents are out there! but will usually have my steeping beauty link.
fyi: the fuel my blog thing is so simple to do, I will have to get on there after my vacation!
Desperate plea: if someone out there could explain to me about aol pay per click, I can’t find anything for people spending less than $5000 a month! I just want like the google adwords for my barefoot books thing but can’t find it.

Delphine ~ Thanks for commenting. You’re welcome to link to whatever you like and whenever you like. That’s what I love about this little feature.
As for AOL pay per click — I’ve heard echos that Yahoo ads are the way to go — it’s apparently more affordable.
I’ll make this question into a post and see what we can come up with for you :)

Hi Gayla!
First time here…sorry it took so long! Love your blog. As you may know…I’m not a techie–but, I know you can comment/trackback on my blog and you get a live link back to your blog…and, although
I don’t understand your whole post…I too have Askimet as my spam filter. We just installed it this week, after we had 3 problems with Spam Karma since my move to WordPress last month.

Gayla,
Big props to you for bringing this to the public attention. I was MORTIFIED when I found about about this several months ago, an I added the DoFollow plug-in to my WordPress blog immediately.
The arguments for why the “nofollow” was put in place to begin with do not hold water, especially when doing so pinches off one of the most effective ways that bloggers can make the blogosphere a better place.

Margalit,
Actually, Classic style Blogger templates do not allow for removal of NoFollow (unless published by FTP) because they use {$CommentAuthorName$} which encapsulates the anchor text around linking text. I just checked your page and it’s still not following comments. :(
The NoFollow in Classic styled Blogger templates is for backlinks, which you probably DON’T want to remove.
On Layouts it can be removed simply by deleting the portion that says: rel=’nofollow’ which is after the

Oh yes, now reading through…I see I am an exception. Well, I don’t like new blogger. I’ve tried it. No go.
I’ve got my own domain and use WordPress. It was one thing to move Rec and Review blogs there (hadn’t built up a super strong ranking there) but had built up a decent one on the Main Blog, so harder to move it.
My Big Big Question has been WHY oh WHY my Technorati rating plunges (lost 100 authority points and rank HA! down and down) when my Google rating is good and secure. Is it a real reflection? Or is Technorati screwy? (I did enjoy that half day when I was #1—when we were all #1! LOL)

The good thing with dofollow links as oppose to nofollow, is that it can actual help a websites listings, Google will spider the site and realise that the content update, the more comments the updates which for your site as a whole is a very good way to encourage user generated content, the phenomenon of nofollow has been taken to strongly, people even try getting reciprocal links add a no follow to it, very sneaky. If your using wordpress make sure you install Askimet, this plugin will eliminate much of the spam from automated blogging programs, also look out for the occasional “I found your post very interesting and have similar views myself”, spammers are getting smarter so my thoughts are keep dofollow’s it can only do your site good, so giving a link away is your way of saying thanks for the free content.

I tended to agree with you till my site began to be spammed with lots of comments that had nothing to say, like: Great article, Cool, etc etc etc. Just for the links. Not to mention that some of the links pointed to porn sites or to blogs selling Viagra and other stuff.
So, i decided to deactivate the Do-Follow plugin, in order to stop this madness and since i didn’t anted to get penalized by Google. Didn’t you encounter the same problems?
