Are Bloggers Lonely?

Well apparently one of those expensive University type studies would have you think so!

University of Calgary who claims:

Blogs, short for web logs, are everywhere on the Internet these days and often reveal the innermost feelings of individuals who hate their jobs, activists with a political cause or even angst-ridden teenagers in the throes of first love.

Michael Keren, who has written “Blogosphere: The New Political Arena,” suggests individuals who bare their souls in blogs are isolated and lonely, living in a virtual reality instead of forming real relationships or helping to change the world.”Bloggers think of themselves as rebels against mainstream society, but that rebellion is mostly confined to cyberspace, which makes blogging as melancholic and illusionary as Don Quixote tilting at windmills,” the author says.

As a person who has been working online for over 8 years, I can state with authority, that I am NOT lonely. In fact, I’m anything but lonely.

As far as not forming real relationships? One of the friends I met online actually stood up with me at my wedding. I’ve also got another friend from online that I speak to on the phone almost daily. We’ve yet to meet each other in person.

I’ve met many more friends on the net and through my blogs that I absolutely adore - and trust! There’s nothing unrealistic about them!

What do you think? Are you a lonely blogger?

Heck no! Far from lonely here, too. I have been working on line for 10 years and have clients and friends who I have never met. With three kids and a good base of support, I am far from lonely.

  2. Gayla says:

Wouldn’t you think that writing a book on lonely bloggers would be more lonely than blogging?

  3. Doris says:

I don’t agree at all! Infact, my life is busier than before, far from being lonely!! This is a very conservative perspective. I’m loving my life more since I become more active in the blogosphere!

  4. Kim says:

Shoot, I wish I could be “alone” more so I could meet more people and expand my current “circle”. I wonder how much was paid for this research? Sounds like only one perception to me….not so sure any research was done at all!
